CHAPTER 12 PRUNING FOLDERS
CONCEPTS...
In the first couple of chapters in this documentation we
described what a GIM folder is all about, and how to use it.
You may want to review chapter 3 for a discussion about
folders.
The Prune Area creates a brand new folder which contains an
excerpt of information (people, families, and stuff) from an
existing folder.
For example, suppose a cousin of yours would like to receive
genealogical information from you. You could send him or her
your complete family tree; however, he or she is only really
interested in half of your genealogical information. In that
case, use the Prune Area to split off a branch of your folder
into a new folder, and then send him or her just that branch
of the tree.
STARTING OUT...
To get to the Prune Area, you must first open a folder for
editing, then press F6. This edit folder is the family tree
that is the source for extracting a portion of genealogical
information, that is, a branch of your family tree.
The process of pruning, that is, of breaking off a branch,
involves four steps. First, give a name to the new folder to
be created. Second, identify a "pivot person", that is, some
individual who is the person around whom the new folder will
center. Third, identify the parts of the tree relative to the
pivot person who should be included in the new folder. And
finally, either copy or move the branch into the new folder.
Each of these steps will be explained below.
NAMING THE NEW FOLDER...
From the Prune Area, press F1. GIM will ask you for a name
for the new folder. Type in a suitable name and press return.
IDENTIFYING A PIVOT PERSON...
By now you should be familiar with navigating around in a
folder. You may want to review chapter 4 for details.
Navigate to the person who will be the focus of your branch.
In the next step you will tell GIM to include ancestors and/or
descendants of this person in the new folder.
If, for example, you are sending genealogical information to
your cousin, you might want to select your cousin as the pivot
person. To do so, navigate to that person, and proceed to the
next step.
INCLUDING ANCESTORS AND DESCENDENTS...
A word about branches. A branch within GIM starts at one
person -- the pivot person -- and then goes up to include
all of that persons ancestors and their families, or else it
may go down to include descendants and their families; or it
may include both of these, or neither of them.
In addition, you can augment this by including parents,
siblings, spouses and/or children of the pivot person, and
this may be either in addition to, or instead of including
ancestors and descendents.
Press and hold the <Shift> key to see the various things you
can include in the new folder. These are:
Shift+F1 Ancest-direct-line
Direct line ancestors of the pivot person
Shift+F2 Ancest-immediate-fam
Direct line ancestors of the pivot person,
with immediate family members for each
Shift+F3 Ancest-extend-fam
Direct line ancestors of the pivot person,
with extended family information -- about
three generations worth of close relatives
Control+F1 Descend-direct-line
Control+F2 Descend-immediate-fam
Control+F3 Descend-extend-fam
Same as the above, but for descendants
instead of ancestors
Control+F5 Self
This is just the pivot person as a single
person. The "self" person is selected by
definition whenever any other modifier is
chosen, but this "self" modifier lets you
prune a folder containing just a single
person, if you should want to do so.
Shift+F4 Parents
All parents of the pivot person
Shift+F5 Spouses
All spouses of the pivot person
Shift+F6 Siblings
All siblings of the pivot person
Shift+F7 Children
All children of the pivot person
DO IT...
As the final step in the pruning process, you may choose one
of three flavors of pruning once you have identified the
branch that you want to prune:
F3, Copy Copy that branch to the new folder
F4, Copy and Delete Copy that branch to the new folder,
then delete the branch from the
original folder
F5, Delete Delete that branch from the original
folder without saving that data to
anywhere else
Under most circumstances you will usually only use the copy
function (F3). On rare occasion you might wish to copy and
delete a branch or simply delete a branch. Be very careful;
once information is deleted it cannot be recovered!
